Batik art of India Asian paintings come from Bengal . Batik art refers to the art of dyeing fabric by making use of resist techniques, covering areas of cloth with a dye resistant substance to prevent them from absorbing colors. The technique of Batik art dates back a thousand years and can be traced to India. Batik art is created in several ways like splash method, screen printing method, and hand painting one is by a Kalamkari pen. As patterns are applied by actual drawing rather than by weaving with thread, the artists can put forth their best in terms of creativity and imagination. The colors in Batik art are much more resistant to wear than those of painted or printed fabrics because the cloth is completely immersed in dye and allowed to absorb colors deeply. The batik art of India is a three stage process of waxing, dyeing and dewaxing (removing the wax). The use of wax properly is also important to get the desired pattern. Cloths like cambric, poplin, voiles, and pure silk are used. Natural colors derived from barks of trees, leaves, flowers and minerals are used in Batik fabric. Shantiniketan in West Bengal is the key center of Batik art in India . Batik paintings involve a wide range of themes and imageries, ranging from religious icons to tribal life and abstract patterns. The Batik art fabric is in high demand as dress materials, designer home decor and also as forming an important part of contemporary fashion accessory.
The mughals gave India seven generations of extraordinary rulers. One of them, Akbar the Great, who was a contemporary of Elizabeth I of England, paved the way for what the Mughals are best remembered for – artistic and architectural grandeur. When he came to the throne in 1556, Persian art and culture formed the standards of the age. It was through Persian achievements that cultural advance was judged throughout south and west Asia. Humayan, Akbar’s father, had introduced Persian achievements that cultural advance was judged throughout south and west Asia. Humayun, Akbar’s father, had introduced Persian painters and poets to his court in Delhi – and so Persian influence was already strong. In Akbar’s time it became profound.
Akbar made Agra his capital. Though he was illiterate, he was a great king and a great man who was naturally cultivated. His court glittered with the literati, the illuminati and painters, many of whom were Persian masters. At Akbar’s court they were given the freedom to unfold their genius. Ateliers, with Persian and Indian artists flourished under the emperor’s benign eye. Soon, Indian artists outnumbered the Persians. Persian elegance and refinement began to flow from their brushed as illuminations for manuscripts. Persian-Islamic styles and Indian tradition fused with one another to evolve a distinct Indo-Islamic style.
The Warlis have their own social organisation in whihc there is no castre differentiation. The head of the village is the sarpanch whose main work is “to settle quarrels arising because of the women wanting to leave their husbands”. The virtual rulers of teh community, hwoever, are the bhagats, the priest-cum-medicine-men, for nothing can be done without consulting them. In fact the ordinary Warli knows very little about his own customs and rites and claims that he follows them because the bhagats have said so. it is possible that the bhagats jealously guard a position once occupied by priestesses who still perform the all-important rite of marrying the couples. It may also be as a result of thier propaganda that wome are regarded with suspicion lest one of them be a witch. In the remote interiors suspected witches can be done to death by the entire village. That an earlier matriarchal cult, which still exists to some extent, prevailed among te Warlis is indicated by the fact that men still have to pay a bride-price and that the role of the maternal uncle is important in many of thier rites. Paradoxically, most men have as many as four or five wives while women are not allowed to marry more than once. But women, at the same time, leave thier men equally easily, attracted by others, asserting thier free will; and the chosen man cna then keep the woman provided the pays the original bride-price to the first husband. The Warlis have their own social organisation in whihc there is no castre differentiation. His insightful accounts of flora and fauna with a meticulous concern for detail) remain recorded in his celebrated memoirs Vaqiate-Babri, the first true autobiography in Islamic literature. Existence of a certain kind of painting tradition during his reign at Kabul can be supported by the construction of a Surat-khana, a gallery with painted walls, which he commissioned sometime between 1504 and 1519 in a Plane-tree Garden.’ A passage from his memoirs is typical of his poetic expression and aesthetic conceptions alluding to the primacy of nature.
The front door of a home is equally important in a country where sometimes the next house is miles away, a door may only be needed as a barrier against sun and rain and the odd wild beast. In the sandy landscapes of Rajasthan and Gujarat a door can merely be a length of brightly coloured fabric, shot through with silver or gold and encrusted with thousands of tiny mirrors. Through the length and breadth of India, doors range from the essence of simplicity and elegance to ones that are richly carved examples of wood and metal.

Dance, a physical expression of art, dedication and devotion, is believed to have originated from Lord Shiva’s dance of creation Tandava.
Since that period to the present era, Indian dances have been modified and redefined time and time again. Yet the basic essence of this art form remains the same what Bharat Muni described in his famous book Natya Shastra thousands of years ago.
Indian dance tradition has its root deeply set in the Hindu mythology and religion. Just like the first sound that was created by Brahma, the first dance was created by Shiva. Known as Nataraj, the king of dances, lord Shiva performed the dance of fury, from the heat of which the universe was created. The thunderous chants of this dance with the beat produced by Shiva’s own drum, damru, vibrated the universe in to being. To counter the heat of his dance, Shiva’s consort Parvati, performed a dance that was in contrast with Tandava. Known as Lasya, this dance had comparatively slower and calming steps.
Miniature Painting as a living art faded with the 19th century. Now Delhi, Varanasi, Udaipur and Jaipur have become centers for latter day miniaturists working on paper, cloth and ivory, although this is now difficult to acquire thanks to animal protection legislation, and artists rely either on recycling old ivory or on a busy black market.
They generally use thin sheer, often made up of several carefully joined pieces, and smooth the surface with cuttlebone, a very soft natural abrasive, before drawing a pencil sketch. When the outline is satisfactory it is inked in with a fine brsh then, after drying, washed over to soften the lines. The ground color is filled in first, starting at the top, and the buildings, plants and animals added. Human figures follow; the faces, so easily damaged the touch of a sweaty hand, are left till last. Acrylic paints are generally used, but the best work calls for natural pigments. The technique of painting on paper is very similar but here the outline softened by covering the surface with chalk.
